About

Established in 2019, J+Mikoto is a conceptual brand based in Stockholm, Sweden and Kanagawa, Japan. With timeless design and attention to details, the universe of J+Mikoto draws inspiration from diverse fields such as traditional handcraft, industrial design, architecture, fine arts and popular culture.

Our mission is to keep a conscious distance towards cultural conformity, at the same time staying true to our heritage. Combining Nordic design elements with Japanese aesthetics, we strive towards pushing boundaries creating something reminiscent and familiar, yet unique and conspicuous in the contemporary realm.

In Japanese mythology, Mikoto acknowledges the name of a heightened entity, free from acquiescence and fear. Just like the ancient gods and spirits, we wish the bearer of our modern day charms and amulets will find their own manifested individuality.

J+M_1 ORIHAGANE – A TALE OF FOLDED STEEL

Paper and steel, two opposing materials, yet at the same time two cornerstones of Japanese handicraft and aesthetics. A vision to combine the contrasting aspects of the materials (fragility and robustness), resulted in the Orihagane collection.

The three dimensional designs interpreted from actual folded paper figures into metal has been elaborately curated and developed by J+Mikoto in collaboration with Norio Torimoto, one of the top origami masters of the world.

The two initial designs of the collection: “Tsuru” and “Sempu” are part of a work in progress origami jewelry collection, planned to be completed in 2020.

Orihagane is a unique and artisanal take on the mathematical and geometrical aspects of origami paper folding, as well as the organic shapes of nature.
